Exxon Mobil, who is the largest oil company in the world by market capitalisation, is apparently in talks with the state owned energy company TPAO about the possibility of exploring for shale gas in Turkey.
Turkey was estimated by the US government last year to have around 15 trillion cubic feet of shale gas which is technically recoverable, and it's hoped that Exxon could help TPAO tap into these huge reserves.
The company is currently looking at the potential in Trakya, in western Turkey and is deciding whether to enter into partnership with TPAO. The possibility of finding energy reserves in Turkey is beginning to attract a number of large foreign firms, as in November TPAO signed an agreement with Shell, Europe's largest energy company, to look for gas and oil in the Mediterranean and south-east region of Turkey.
Shell is hoping to develop shale gas deposits near to the city of Diyarbakir in south-eastern Turkey. Apparently other major international firms are also interested in exploring nearby areas.
In April last year a study by Advanced Resources International for the US government was made to look for global shale gas prospects, and identified Turkey, Poland, France, Ukraine, Morocco, Chile and South Africa as all being countries whose future energy supplies could be significantly boosted by shale gas.
The study identified two main areas in Turkey as being potential sites for shale gas production. One is the Anatolian Basin in the south-east, and the other is the Thrace Basin which is located to the west of Istanbul. It's essential for TPAO to have the support of large oil companies who already have expertise in horizontal drilling and fracturing equipment which is needed to extract shale gas. It's a complicated business to extract the gas, and there are only a few companies with sufficient infrastructure to drill a number of wells at the same time.
