Tourism Booming in TurkeyWith imminent European Union (EU) membership, Turkey is emerging as the hottest tourist destination in Europe. Though Turkey is a largely moderate Muslim nation, yet the surge in number of visitors to the country has taken even the most optimistic Turks by surprise. Sample this. On an average, Turkey attracts around 25 million visitors every year. The statistics from the Culture and Tourism Ministry revealed that in just the first two months of 2008, Turkey welcomed 1.7 million tourists, which is 11.8% increase from the same time last year.If we go by figures, during the first two months this year, German visitors were the maximum clocking 294,827, followed by Bulgarians with 142,528, and Russians with 97,235.A little more scrutiny of these figures reveals that visitors from EU countries rose by 12.2% with 785,471 tourists. Turkey has also witnessed a marked rise in popularity among East-European nations with 281,000 visitors, which is an increase of 10.5%.This is not all. The Government of Turkey has ambitious plans to achieve 50 million visitors per year mark by 2023. In real terms, it means an increase in revenue by US$50 million. And these are not mere announcements. The government has undertaken several measures in order to create conducive environment for investors to flock in this country of 70 million plus.Reasons for Booming Tourism in TurkeyIf the experts are calling the phenomenon of booming tourism in Turkey some kind of ‘madness’, then there is a method to this madness. There are plausible reasons why the tourists are ‘invading’ Turkey like never before. The first reason is the vastly improved image of the country. Earlier, people used to inevitably link Turkey to the never-ending dispute with its neighbour Greece over Northern Cyprus. So much so that the country was labelled aggressor in this conflict. However, with EU seriously considering the Turkish application for full membership, the negative perception of the country has transformed into a positive one and the Northern Cyprus dispute is ever close to resolution.Turkey has left no stone unturned in order to attract both tourists and investors in the country. The investors find newly opened market of Turkey as once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where they can make a kill if they play their cards right. And the tourists are shown the hidden treasures of the country that has a rich historical legacy to share with the world. Some of the landmarks in Turkey include The Haghia Sophia, a 6th Century building that was once the world’s largest church but now a museum, Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Sultanahmet Mosque, The Kariye Museum, Domabahce Palace, ancient city of Troy, world’s greatest archaeological site - the ruins of Ephesus, remains of ancient city of Aphrodisias, Mevlevi Convent and Museum, Pamukkale, Mt. Nemrut, and Safranbolu. The tourists also love the life in coastal towns along the 7000 kilometres long coastline spanning Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Though quite underplayed, Turkey has some of the best sandy beaches in Europe. The quality of aquatic adventures in this country is next to none. The pleasant climate, warm hospitality of the Turks, and picturesque landscape only add to the charm called Turkey. The most important factor contributing to the immense popularity of Turkey among overseas visitors is the curiosity to witness the lifestyle of Muslims up, close and personal. Since, most Turks are moderate Muslims, the westerners obviously want to learn more about the Islamic culture due to the current events that is literally witnessing a clash of civilizations. The country is largely peaceful with people living in harmony and going about their chores in a routine manner. The investment climate in the country is ideal. And most tourists make use of this opportunity to explore the real estate investment opportunities in the country.Golf tourism is another highlight of Turkish tourism sector. The country has numerous golf courses and resorts and plenty more in the pipeline. These world-class golf courses are a major draw as far as western tourists are concerned. As a buffer nation between Asia and Europe, Turkey has a responsible role to play in global politics. Understanding its responsibilities, the Turkish government has lent priority to opening up its frontiers to more and more visitors from across the globe.
