Turkey officially launched its campaign to host the 2016 European Football Championships

Posted On: 27/12/2009

Turkey officially launched its campaign to host the 2016 European Football Championships with a ceremony held in Istanbul on Wednesday 23rd December 2009.

Nine stadiums in eight cities in Turkey will host EURO 2016 matches if Turkey is picked to host Europe's largest football event, the Turkish Football Federation, or TFF, announced. Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium, which will be renovated, and Galatasaray’s Turk Telekom Arena, which is expected to open next September, would be used. New stadiums would be built in six cities: Ankara, Ýzmir, Bursa, Konya, Antalya and Eskiþehir. Kayseri’s Kadir Has Stadium would be another venue.

Authorities said major infrastructure investments are planned for the host cities, especially in public transport and accommodation

Officials also revealed the logo for the bid, which consists of a football ball in a tulip figure, created with eight colors representing the eight cities.

Turkey competes with France and Italy to host EURO 2016 after Swedish-Norwegian joint bid failed. The host country will be chosen on May 28, 2010. The format of the final tournament will consist of six groups of four teams, followed by a round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

TFF President Mahmut Ozgener said both France and Italy have earlier hosted the event, which can be an advantage for Turkey. “Turkey is the only country among candidates that has not hosted the European Championships,” said Ozgener. We successfully organized the Champions League final in 2005 and the UEFA Cup final last May. Also Turkey has hosted, and will host, many major events in other sports. We have no doubt that EURO 2016 will be a success if Turkey is given the chance.”

Ozgener said Turkey would work very hard until the host country is chosen. “To host an event that 3 million people are expected to follow in the host country will have significant contributions to Turkey financially and the facilities to be built will guarantee the future of Turkish football.”

State Minister Faruk Ozak, who is responsible for sports and youth, said the Turkish government was ready to give all guarantees, reassuring that the bid would not face any financial problems.

“The process will not be only the TFF’s responsibility, we can achieve if we create a team spirit,” said the minister. “We will provide anything requested from the state, even guarantee from the Treasury. Letters of support by the president, the prime minister and all ministers have been sent to the TFF and the involved parties.”

EURO 2016 Project Coordinator Orhan Gorbon noted that it was the third time turkey bid to host the European Championships. “We will compete against two of the biggest countries in Europe, which have strong lobbies,” he said. “But we are ready for the challenge and I believe that Turkey will host EURO 2016.”

Major investments will be made if Turkey is given the right to host the tournament. Over 4,000 million euros will be invested in stadiums, 1 billion euros will be spent on building and developing tourism facilities and an additional 250 million euros will be spent on promotion and advertisements.

Turkey is going through major positive changes and with the European Capital of Culture for Istanbul for 2012 and the possibility of the European Championships in 2016 these are exciting times for Turkey.
