Turkish President Gul has stated a renewed determination to progress towards EU membership in the new year.
"We can be more hopeful in 2010," Gül told the private CNN Türk news channel.
He added that whether or not Turkey became a full member was a different issue. He also hinted that their strategy going forwards was to focus on meeting the criteria internally before concentrating on the Cyprus issue, which he did say was being misused by the Union.
Gul also highlighted the current strength of Turkey's relations with other global players including Russia, the US and in the Middle East.
"Turkey is having constructive, not destructive, relations with its environment," Gül added.
"It is important to turn this region, the entire Caucasus, into a region of stability and peace and an area of cooperation,"
Basically Gul put into words what we have been watching and commenting on anyway; maximising the benefit from their strategic location and their good relations with east and west for the good of the Turkish economy and state.
Turkey is also capitalising on its strong tourism industry to build its growth. Turkey recently agreed a visa-free arrangement with Syria, and has similar deals in the pipeline with several other Middle Eastern states.
Gul also said that he hopes the process of normalisation with Armenia can be completed in 2010, though was keen to say that he could not say for definite because of the sensitivity of the issues.
